Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor and specialist in Greco-Latin culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who have favored him with the fruits of high culture in a context awash in natural delights. Although Elio’s sophistication and intellectual gifts indicate that the boy is an accomplished adult, his personality also exudes innocence and a lack of form, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.

This summer romance set in Italy in 1983, is the best film of 2017 nominated for an Oscar. The film features a superb performance by Timothée Chalamet, supported by a great cast, and excellent script and direction.

The film was written by James Ivory, known for directing great British productions: A Love in Florence (1985), Howards End (1992) and What Remains of the Day (1993), all literary adaptations by writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and produced by Ivory’s partner Ismail Merchant.

Here too there are active silences, where the main characters, either among themselves or in solitude, prefer to say nothing, and the silence implies hidden feelings, challenging truths, and other internal conflicts. The characters are always doing things, always developing, and the absence of dialogue is sometimes an integral part of that development.

As for the sex, the scenes are romantic, sweet, unleashed, and one (with a peach) is especially shocking. However, perceptions of sex do not function only as viewer judgments; we interpret sex as an extension of the characters’ reactions to their own behaviors.

Elio is an Italian boy who meets Oliver, an American doctoral student who is welcomed on a summer stay at his parents’ home. Oliver discovers the foreignness of Europe from a safe place; Elio does the same with relationships and love that first arrives in limbo between adolescence and adulthood; partly in his environment, partly with the figure of the stranger with whom he must share a room.

Between controversy and expectation, this film does not seem to be one of the favorites for the Academy Award for Best Picture; however, it is an emotional and enjoyable experience that more than one person will identify with regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
